Allotments

The Parish rents out more than 75 allotments at its site off the Reading Road.

After several years when there were vacant plots, tending an allotment has now become a very popular pastime. The demand for allotments has gone up dramatically and there is now a waiting list of over 40 Winnersh residents as well as some people from outside Winnersh (Winnersh residents take priority when allocating plots).

Recently the Parish Council has split some of the allotments into half-size plots which will be more manageable for some of the established allotment holders and provide more opportunities for newer ones to get started. The Council is also investigating the possibility of obtaining more land for use as allotments.

The Parish runs an annual allotment competition judged by a member of the Royal Horticultural Society.

The winners of the 2009 allotment competition were presented with certificates and garden centre gift vouchers at the September Parish Council meeting.

The picture shows winner Robert Wigley (right) and Jim Dyke (left - second place) receiving their certificates from Cllr John Southgate.

Judge Les Moody again commented on the very high standards achieved and that there were several other plots that came close to winning.
